Eye care expert at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, Prof. Bola Adekoya, has described artificial intelligence as the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.

She said using artificial intelligence in health sector especially in eye care could help in early dictation of eye diseases and also aid keeping medical records as well.

She noted this yesterday, at the 10th anniversary lecture of Viewpoint Specialist Eye Centre, titled artificial intelligence in eye care, held at Ilupeju, Lagos.

She said in health sector because of high number of people affected by eye diseases. There is limited material resources, limited human resources therefore incorporation of artificial intelligence with human personnel eye care experts could be able to deliver effectively to the teeming population in a faster manner and accurate.

She said: “Because there are high data out there human being cannot be able to process. However, using artificial intelligence we can be able to provide more efficient healthcare service to the patients”.

Chairman of Viewpoint Specialist Eye Centre Mr. David Sauta, said the world is fast developing therefore Nigerians need to meet up with international standard by using artificial intelligence to run healthcare services especially in eye care.

He encouraged upcoming eye care specialists to invest more in educating the younger generation about the knowledge and importance of eye care service as this can improve their sight in general.
