In the exciting realm of Web3, where transparency and wealth creation reign supreme, women have faced unique challenges. These hurdles were passionately debated at the “Bull or Bear” event, a highlight of the 2023 Philippine Blockchain Week, hosted by educational platform Bitskwela.

The event, titled “Bull or Bear: On-Chain Inclusivity: A Debate on Women Empowerment in Web3,” brought together six influential women from the Web3 landscape to share their contrasting perspectives on the challenges women face.

Dr. Nataliya Ilyushina, an economist and research fellow at RMIT University’s Blockchain Innovation Hub, argued that the absence of regulations in Web3 exposes women to greater risks. She pointed out the vulnerabilities to scams and workplace injustices, emphasizing the need for protective measures such as social welfare benefits.

Belinda Lim, co-founder of Embolden Ventures, took a different stance. She highlighted that regulations in traditional industries offer protection but also introduce discrimination. Web3, she argued, thrives on inclusivity, creating an environment where women may face less discrimination.

Audience feedback in a post-debate poll revealed a split, with 50% supporting the idea that regulations provide essential protection and structure, while the other 50% saw promise in the reduced discrimination within the open and decentralized nature of Web3.

Ida Mok, president of Women in Blockchain Asia, highlighted the challenges women face when initiating their projects in a male-dominated industry. Citing industry statistics, she emphasized the need for change to address the imbalance in the workforce.

Ivy Gutierrez of the Lady Traders of Global Miranda Miner Group, on the other hand, portrayed Web3 as a realm where women can achieve financial independence. She showcased the inspiring progress women have made in the industry.

According to Camille Puentespina, Chief Product and Tech Officer of Bitskwela, the aim is to broaden women’s roles in the field, extending beyond the confines of business development and executive positions.

Jiro Reyes, co-founder and CEO of Bitskwela, announced a strategic partnership with W3GG to support community members in multiple Southeast Asian countries, further promoting diversity and inclusion in Web3.

The “Bull or Bear: On-Chain Inclusivity” event, co-presented by GCrypto, Tekkon, ICP Hub Philippines, and Blockceler8 by Uniquecorn Strategies PR, received support from the Philippine Blockchain Week, OctaFX, CoinVault, and TikTok. The event was a significant step in addressing the unique challenges women encounter in the Web3 industry while also celebrating their achievements. (MCN)
