The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, stressed that AI is going to have an impact on all aspects of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time that these technologies can \u201ceradicate poverty, fight hunger, cure cancer and empower climate action\u201d, \u201cmilitary and non-military applications of AI can have serious consequences for global peace and security\u201d, he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in security, including by the UN, to \u201cidentify patterns of violence, surveillance of ceasefires\u201d either \u201creinforce peacekeeping, mediation and humanitarian efforts\u201d. However, he recalled that they can be double-edged technologies, because \u201cThey can also be used by malicious people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe malicious use of artificial intelligence systems for terrorist, criminal or state purposes could cause horrific levels of death and destructionwidespread trauma and deep psychological damage on an unimaginable scalethe official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, \u201cmechanisms for the governance of artificial intelligence are urgently needed,\u201d said the UN chief, who is going to ask a group of experts to propose \u201coptions\u201d in this field by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, requested that by the end of 2026 a binding instrument is established to prohibit theautonomous lethal weapons systems\u201d that work without human supervision and that \u201cnever retire\u201d to the people of nuclear weapons control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
