The global survey<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>of 1,739 line of business (LoB) employees in organizations with at\u00a0least 250 employees revealed only 37% of organizations definitely have the skills and\u00a0technology to keep pace with digital projects during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority (82%) of LoB employees believe they need quick and easy access to data,\u00a0IT systems and applications to do their jobs effectively and remain productive. Access to\u00a0data is critical as more than half (59%) of LoB users are involved in identifying, suggesting or\u00a0creating new ways to improve the delivery of digital services externally, such as building an\u00a0online self-service portal or a customer-facing mobile application. Yet less than one-third\u00a0(29%) think their organization is very effective in connecting and using data from multiple\u00a0sources to drive business value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery industry faces immediate change, and every organization needs to respond to the\u00a0needs of its customers faster than ever before in a digital-first world,\u201d said Brent Hayward,\u00a0CEO, MuleSoft. \u201cThis research shows data is one of the most critical assets businesses\u00a0need to move fast and thrive into the future. Organizations need to empower every\u00a0employee to unlock and integrate data \u2014 no matter where it resides \u2014 to deliver critical\u00a0time-sensitive projects and innovation at scale, while making products and services more\u00a0connected than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State of Business and IT Innovation report highlights the challenges and opportunities\u00a0businesses need to address to digitally transform:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data silos increasingly slow down digital initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\u00a0McKinsey, businesses that once mapped digital strategy in one to three-year\u00a0phases must now scale their initiatives in a matter of days or weeks. This report also sheds\u00a0light on the COVID-19 pandemic leading to an increase in digital initiatives by an average\u00a011-23%<sup>2<\/sup>,\u00a0highlighting what is hampering the pace of business and the ability to meet\u00a0customer expectations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Data silos:\u00a0<\/strong>A third (33%) of LoBs employees say the COVID-19 pandemic hasrevealed a lack of connectivity between existing IT systems, applications, and data\u00a0as an inefficiency when it comes to digital delivery.<\/li><li><strong>A lack of digital skills:\u00a0<\/strong>Almost three in ten (29%) of LoB employees say a lack ofdigital skills across the business is also an inefficiency when delivering digital\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Already stretched IT teams can\u2019t deliver projects quickly enough:\u00a0<\/strong>More than half(51%) of LoB employees are currently frustrated by the speed at which their IT team\u00a0can deliver digital projects.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Integration challenges directly impact revenue and customer experiences\u00a0<\/strong>In light of increasing operational inefficiencies, it is not surprising that more than half (54%) of LoB respondents say they are frustrated by the challenge of connecting different IT systems, applications, and data at their organization. Many view this weakness as a threat to their business and the ability to provide connected customer experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Siloed systems and data slow down business growth:\u00a0<\/strong>LoB employees are well aware of the repercussions of failing to connect systems, applications, and data. More than half (59%) agree that failure in this area will hinder business growth and revenue.<\/li><li><strong>Behind disconnected experiences are disconnected systems, applications, and data:\u00a0<\/strong>The majority (59%) of LoB employees agree that an inability to connect systems, applications, and data will negatively impact customer experience \u2014 a fundamental prerequisite for business success today.<\/li><li><strong>Automation initiatives require integration:\u00a0<\/strong>Three in five (60%) respondents admit that failure to connect systems, applications and data will also hinder automation initiatives. This comes at a time when a growing number of organizations are looking to automate business processes via capabilities, such as robotic process automation (RPA).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Organizations must unlock data to empower everyone to go digital, faster<\/strong>\u00a0As demands for digital initiatives grow, organizations across industries need to move faster\u00a0than ever before. Business users are frustrated by data silos, slowing their ability to meet\u00a0customer demand and innovate in today\u2019s all-digital, work from anywhere world. The report\u00a0highlights the need to democratize these capabilities by giving business users the tools they\u00a0need to easily and quickly unlock data, connect applications and automate processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Organizations need to scale innovation beyond the four walls of IT:\u00a0<\/strong>The majority(58%) of LoB employees think IT leaders are spending more of their time \u201ckeeping\u00a0the lights on\u201d rather than supporting innovation. Furthermore, 44% go as far as to say\u00a0they think their organization\u2019s IT department is a blocker on innovation. By using a\u00a0self-serve model that empowers everyone to unlock data, IT can enable innovation\u00a0everywhere \u2014 in a way that\u2019s governed but not gated by IT.
